MRSI Newsletter
A quareterly publication of the Materials Research Society of India

for circulation amongst its members

Volume B 01, Number 2                                                                July  2001

From the Editors’ Desk

his is the second issue of the revived Newsletter. The responses received from our members for the first issue of the Newsletter are very encouraging. The continued success of this Newsletter will depend on the effectiveness with which the members make use of this as a medium of communication amongst them and make it a common link transcending individual disciplines.  We earnestly solicit your cooperation.

This Newsletter comes along with a write up of the activities of MRSI since its inception. This is indeed a measure of the impressive growth of our society.  In the past this update used to be published a s a separate booklet.  With the revival of the Newsletter the resume of the activities of MRSI is made as part of the Newsletter itself.

INFORMATION COLLECTION AND DISSEMINATION SYSTEM

The Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) has identified MRSI as a nodal agency for developing a data base for non-ferrous materials.  In this connection, TIFAC has provided financial support to create a data bank on non-ferrous materials at MRSI headquarters, DMRL, Hyderabad dedicated for the purpose of data acquisition and storage pertaining to non-ferrous materials, technologies for their processing and areas of their application. A group of professionals with diverse background in Metallurgy, Computer Science and Library / Information science are working with this project. Presently the data bank consists of 1325 technology records on Non-ferrous Materials and it has published many value-added reports in the area of Non-ferrous Materials.

It has been decided to shift the MRSI/TIFACLINE Unit to ARC-International, Hyderabad.   Its scope will be widened to cover the areas of ceramics, powder metallurgy and surface engineering.

PUBLICATIONS

MRSI co-sponsors the publication of Bulletin of Materials Science (BMS) published by the Indian Academy of Sciences.  In addition, several special issues of BMS have been brought out. The BMS published 565 pages of scientific articles in 2000. The BMS will be available on internet soon. Two special issues of Materials Awareness Bulletin on “Application of Rare Earths” and “Processing Technologies for Advanced Ceramics and Composites” were brought out as a joint publication of Materials Research Society of India and Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory. It also brought out a special issue on the IUMRS-ICA-98 Conference.

MRSI is also bringing out the MRSI Newsletter which will include the ‘Calendar of Events’ where the forthcoming  conferences/symposia/workshops related to Materials Science will be listed along with the name and address of the contact persons. The MRSI Newsletter is being  edited by Prof. H L Bhat and Dr. R V Krishnan.  Information about the future events may please be communicated to them.

TIFACLINE group brings out a quarterly Newsletter on Non-Ferrous Materials as a Joint Publication of MRSI, TIFAC & DMRL.

The MRSI has also brought out its updated version of membership directory in 2001.  It has an interactive website (www.igcar.ernet.in/mrsi) for interactions amongst its members interested in science and technology of materials.

MRSI is now planning to bring out an edited volume of the Science and Technology of Materials in the New Millennium with special emphasis on the Indian scenario.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

MRSI is a founding Adhering Body of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS).

IUMRS together with C-MRS, MRS-INDIA, MRS-JAPAN, MRS-KOREA and MRS-TAIWAN  reached an important decision in October 1992 to launch a new series of MRS Conference in Asia.  The series is titled “The IUMRS International Conference in Asia” or IUMRS-ICA.  The first conference of this series, IUMRS-ICA 1993, was organized by C-MRS. Later it was organised by MRS-TAIWAN in 1994, MRS-Korea in1995, MRS-Japan in 1997, MRS India in 1998, MRS China in 1999 and MRS Hong Kong in 2000.

The MRS-Singapore is holding the ‘International conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies’ (ICMAT) during July 1-6, 2001.  Many members of MRSI and Indian scientists are participating in the ICMAT.

The IUMRS-ICAM-2001 will be held at Cancum, Mexico during the year 2001.

The hosting of IUMRS-ICA 98 meeting at Bangalore during October 13-16, 1998 was a major activity of MRSI.  The Conference had 22 Theme Symposia and was held in 7 parallel sessions. More than 150 invited talks were delivered and nearly 700 contributed papers were presented.  As already mentioned the proceedings of the Conference, consisting of the invited talks has been published as a special issue of Bulletin of Materials Science. This volume has been very well received by all.

MRSI is a founding member of Asia Pacific Academy of Materials (APAM). It has continued its strong links with APAM. Prof. CNR Rao was its Founder President.  Currently Prof. Kuznetsov is its President. Prof. S V Subramanyam, Hon-Secretary of MRSI has been elected as the Secretary-General of APAM.  APAM currently has 50 .members from India.

APAM is also holding the following  4 seminars in the year 2001:

·Fifth APAM Topical Seminar "Materials and   processes for power electronics devices"
3-5 May 2001, Novosibirsk, Russia
Prof. F.Kuznetsov, Prof. Lasseev

· Sixth  APAM Topical seminar on building materials
7-9 June 2001, Novosibirsk, Russia
Prof. V.Fedorov

· Seventh APAM topical seminar "Semiconductor materials for thermoelectric and photovoltaic devices’       27-29 August 2001, Moscow, Russia
Prof. V.Zemskov, Prof. F.Kuznetsov

· Eighth Topical Seminar on Material Data Network
December 2001
Prof. Hwang,  Prof. L.J. Chen

APAM has members from India, Russia, Japan, China, Uzbekistan, Korea, Taiwan and Australia.  The APAM India Chapter holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the AGM of MRSI. APAM-India Chapter has been formed with 40 members.

There is significant contingent of materials scientists from India at the MRS-USA meetings held at Boston each year.

MRSI is closely interacting with the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS).  EMRS and MRSI have come together in a Bilateral Discussion Meeting at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, during December 15-17, 1996. EMRS organized an International Conference on “Advanced Materials”, ICAM ’97 at Strasburg, France during June 16-20, 1997.  EMRS had also organized the ICEM meeting at Strasbourg, France in June 2000.
